KHAN BANI SA'AD, Iraq - Following a tip from a concerned local resident, coalition forces discovered a large cache of weapons, October 23, during a raid on a village in the village of Sa'ada, Iraq. The cache marks the largest discovery of explosive-shaped penetrators ever found in a single location in Iraq.

The cache consisted of 124 fully assembled EFPs, 159 copper discs of four different sizes used to make EFPS (including 12-inch discs - one of the largest ever discovered in Iraq), 600-plus pounds of C4 and other explosive devices, 100 mortar rounds. of different types, 31 107 mm rockets, two mortar tubes and 20 clay-type mines.

Soldiers from Troop B, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team from Fort Lewis, Wash., arrested the owner of the cache in the attack.
"My first concern was with my Soldiers," said Capt. Jason Rosenstrauch, B Troop commander. “I was worried that the room was unstable because it smelled like explosives and nitric acid.
"Discoveries like this help keep my Soldiers' spirits up because they know they made a difference," Rosenstrauch continued. "It makes them feel good that they are saving soldiers' lives with their work."
Sa'ada Village is located about five kilometers south of Khan Bani Sa'ad, a town in Diyala province with a population of about 100,000 - half Sunni and half Shia. In the past six weeks, Iraqi security forces planned and executed Operation Justice League, removing most of Al-Qaeda in Iraq and anti-cooperative militia members in Khan Bani Sa'ad. Before the Justice League, the CF, ISF and Iraqi civilians were regularly attacked by enemy insurgents, and the local population was afraid to work with the CF for fear of retaliation.

Rosenstrauch said residents of Khan Bani Sa'ad are now working with coalition forces to keep the rebels out of the city.
"We have a lot of peace in town right now," Rosenstrauch said. "We've had a lot of CLCs reporting enemy activity. People are waking up to the rebels and telling us where they are."
